The Formation of Words (تَكَوُّن الْكَلِمَاتِ)

مِنَ الْحُرُوْفِ الْهِجَائِيَّةِ تَتَرَكَّبُ الْكَلِمَاتُ
Words are created from the letters of the (Arabic) alphabet.

Explanation:

We are all familiar with the beginning and last letters of the (Arabic) alphabet, respectively.

the first of which is the الأَلِف and the last of which is the الْيَاء .

All of the words we use and say in our discussions are derived from these letters, such as:

fatherأَبٌ
motherأُمٌّ
brotherأَخٌ
sisterأُخْتٌ
diligenceاجْتِهَادٌ
success/passingنَجَاحٌ
etc.

The الْكَلِمَة (word) can consist of:

  • one letter, like the الْبَاء (in, with) in ﴿بِسْمِ اللهِ (In the Name of Allah), and the الْهَمْزَة (question article) in ﴿أَلَمْ نَشْرَحْ لَكَ [Have we not open for you (your bosom)],
  • 2 letters, like: “مِنْ” (from, of), “فِيْ” (in, at),
  • three letters, like: “عِنَب” (grapes), “شَجَر” (trees),
  • 4 letters, like: “جَدْوَل” (brook), جَعْفَر (rivulet, Ja’far),
  • 5 letters, like: “سَفَرْجَل” (quince),
  • 6 letters, like: “زَعْفَرَان” (saffron), or
  • 7 letters, like: “اسْتِفْهَام” (questioning)

Additionally , if the الْكَلِمَة kalima

doesn’t go above this limit (that is, it can’t have more than seven letters).
