Importance of Distinguishing (Different) Constructions

أَهَمِّيَّة تَمْيِيْزِ التَّرَاكِيْبِ

وَلِكُلِّ نَوْعٍ مِنْ هَذِهِ التَّغَيُّرَاتِ مَوَاضِعُ لَوْ وَقَعَ فِيْ غَيْرِهَا يُعَدُّ خَطَأً، فَيَلْزَمُنَا لِأَجْلِ أَنْ نَسْلَمَ مِنَ الْخَطَإِ وَيَكُوْنَ نُطْقُنَا صَحِيْحاً أَنْ نَعْرِفَ فِيْ أَيِّ تَرْكِيْبٍ يَكُوْنُ الْفِعْلُ مَرْفُوْعاً أَوْ مَنْصُوْباً أَوْ مَجْزُوْماً، وَفِيْ أَيِّ تَرْكِيْبٍ يَكُوْنُ الاسْمُ مَرْفُوْعاً أَوْ مَنْصُوْباً أَوْ مَجْرُوْراً.     For each type of these changes there are places, should it occur in any other than these (places) it will be counted as an error. Hence, it is necessary for us – in order that we be free from error and our pronunciation (i.e. speech) be correct – to know in which construction the الْفِعْل is مَرْفُوْع  or مَنْصُوْب or مَجْزُوْم , and in which construction the الاسْم is مَرْفُوْع , or مَنْصُوْب or مَجْرُوْر .  

Explanation:

We hear from the (Arab) people the word “عَلِيّ” – for example – sometimes مَرْفُوْع , sometimes مَنْصُوْب and sometimes مَجْرُوْر , such that they say (for example):

  • “عَلِيٌّ شُجَاعٌ” (Ali is brave),
  • “إِنَّ عَلِِياًّ فَصِيْحٌ” (Truly, Ali is eloquent)
  • “لِعَلِيٍّ أَوْلاَدٌ بَرَرَةٌ” (Ali has righteous and very good children)

Is the fact that the word “عَلِيّ” is مَرْفُوْع in the first construction, مَنْصُوْب in the second and مَجْرُوْر in the third binding and obligatory on the one who wants his speech to be correct? The answer is “yes”.

Anyone who utters something other than that has indeed erred, and his speech is contrary to the language of the Arabs, the language of the Noble Qur’an, the (Prophetic) Traditions, authentic books and the speech of the eloquent.

Every كَلِمَة from among the الْكَلِمَات الْمُعْرَبَة (declinable words) is مَرْفُوْع in specific places, مَنْصُوْب in specific places, and likewise is the case when it is مَجْرُوْر and مَجْزُوْم . For that there are rules and principles such that when a person knows them he will be free from error and his speech will conform to the language of the Qur’an.

When it is the case that the change of the الْفِعْل is confined to الرَّفْع , النَّصْب and الْجَزْم , the change of the الاسْم is confined to الرَّفْع , النَّصْب and الْجَرّ , it is for us to know (then) in which construction is the الْفِعْل :

  • مَرْفُوْع or
  • مَنْصُوْب or
  • مَجْزُوْم ,

and in which construction the الاسْم is:

  • مَرْفُوْع  or
  • مَنْصُوْب or
  • مَجْرُوْر

and so on until we reach our intended goal.
